The Hidden Value of Great Admin and Support Staff

There’s a mistake I see in real estate businesses all the time.

We celebrate the salesperson.

We celebrate the listings.

We celebrate the sales.

We celebrate the big commissions.

But we don’t always recognise the people behind the scenes who make those things possible.

Great admin and support staff are one of the biggest competitive advantages a real estate business can have. Often, their value is much greater than what appears on a payslip.

The work nobody sees

A great administrator might be coordinating appointments, preparing documents, managing compliance, organising marketing, answering calls, updating databases, chasing information and making sure nothing falls through the cracks. None of that necessarily looks exciting.

But when it’s done well, the salesperson can focus on what they do best: clients, relationships and business development.

That’s the point.

Great support doesn’t just make life easier. It creates capacity.

Time is the most expensive thing you have

An agent can spend an hour doing admin.

Or they can spend that same hour meeting a potential client.

The admin still needs to happen.

But does it have to be done by the person whose highest-value activity is generating business?

That’s where good structure and support make a huge difference.

The best businesses understand that everyone’s time has a different value.

If you can remove low-value tasks from high-value people, you create more time for the things that actually grow the business.

Support staff protect the client experience

There’s another side to this.

Clients don’t care who is technically responsible for a task.

They just want it done.

If a document is missing, a client doesn’t think, “That’s the admin team’s problem.”

They think, “My agent hasn’t sorted this.”

That means great support staff aren’t just supporting the agent.

They’re protecting the brand.

They’re helping deliver the experience the client expects.

Hire people who make everyone better

I’ve always believed that the best support people aren’t simply task-doers.

They’re problem solvers.

They see something coming before it becomes a problem.

They ask questions.

They improve processes.

They challenge inefficient ways of doing things.

And they understand the bigger picture.

The best admin person in the business can sometimes be the person who quietly saves ten problems from happening in the first place.

Your best people need support too

There’s also a lesson here for business owners.

If your best salesperson is spending their best hours buried in admin, that’s a business problem.

If your admin team is overloaded and constantly firefighting, that’s a business problem.

If everyone is busy but nobody has time to work on the business, that’s a business problem.

Support isn’t an expense you simply tolerate.

Done properly, it’s an investment that allows the entire business to perform better.

My advice

Don’t underestimate the people who keep the wheels turning.

Invest in them.

Give them good systems.

Give them clear expectations.

Give them opportunities to learn.

And most importantly, give them recognition.

Because when you have great people behind great agents, you don’t just create a better workplace. You create a better business.
